Peter Wilson at Drawing Matter
On the 28th of August Peter Wilson spoke to students at Drawing Matter, Shatwell Farm , Somerset, UK.
Drawing Matter is perhaps the most important collection of architectural drawings in Europe, it is certainly the most accessible. Student groups are, by appointment, welcome to visit and hold in their inquisitive hand an original Asplund (Woodland Cemetery) or LC (Governors Palace, Chandigarh) drawing.
An annual Drawing Matter workshop for school leavers, tutored by enthusiastic young architects, offers free accommodation, an appetizer into the profession of architecture and a chance to explore the collection – inspiration for those considering studying architecture.
For this year’s group some thirty of Peter Wilsons drawings held in the collection were pinned up for an author’s explanation and 3 walk-around chats with smaller groups. This was followed by an evening lecture by Peter Wilson called ‘Fatally Distracted by Drawing’.
In half a day the young audience had conceived and built a group design for the ‘Auditorium of Hay-Bales’. The final presentations of students studies of nearby Bruton were presented at the Houser & Werth Somerset gallery (garden – Piet Udolph) in the landed UFO
(ex-Serpentine Pavilion by Similan Radic).
For smaller groups visiting Drawing Matter an overnight stay at the Stags Head in Yarlington is recommended. There Jill the landlady will enliven a super English breakfast with stories of another resident of the Stags Head – Bob the Ghost.
